Self-Employment and New Capital

In this week’s Must Know

  • All About Self-employment: New Report and CAMEO Campaign
  • ShadeFund: New Capital for Natural Resource Based Businesses
  • The Goodies: information on important opportunities like trainings, funding, scholarship programs. This week’s highlight is webinars, webinars, webinars on everything from new capital to new grants to opportunities for your clients.

All About Self-employment: New Report and CAMEO Campaign

This week, MBO Partners released its second annual State of Independence in America report with research from Carolyn Ockles and Steven King. It’s clear that independent work continues to go mainstream: the study documents a clear, structural shift to future independent majority in the nation.

Self-employment is a labor market trend and most corporations aren’t creating jobs. So, last week CAMEO launched the Be Your Own Boss petition.

The goal is to have California apply for $5.3 million in federal money to implement a Self-Employment Assistance program and help unemployed become their own boss and create their own job. Under the SEA program, unemployed workers will be able to receive or maintain their unemployment insurance benefits while they start their own small businesses – a full-time job in its own right – without having to look for other full-time work. Currently, in California this is not the case. A SEA program would drive more clients to your programs and open up additional funding opportunities through the workforce system.

What can you do?

  1. Support this program by signing the Be Your Own Boss petition.
  2. Spread the word! The toolkit has everything you need from sample emails to Facebook posts and tweets to engage your staff, your email list, your clients. Download the toolkit now to get started.

And one more related thing… Friday the unemployment numbers are released – even more reason to sign the petition.

ShadeFund: New Capital for Natural Resource Based Businesses

Join CAMEO and ShadeFund for a free webinar to learn about a new capital source for natural resource based businesses. Green micro enterprises are critical to the development of vibrant communities, resilient economies, and healthy environments. Unfortunately, these businesses – whether they are a community sponsored farm or a wood products company using sustainable lumber – find it tough to raise the affordable capital they need to grow, especially in today’s economic climate.

ShadeFund is a national, web-based microloan program (up to $50,000) for green entrepreneurs who use farmland or forestland responsibly. We invite you to participate in a webinar to learn how California microlenders can work together with ShadeFund to ensure that California’s green innovators have access to the capital they need to grow.

Register for the webinar on Thursday, September 27, 2012 from 2:00-3:00 pm PT.
