Celebrate Veterans Small Business Week at WOVEN

We are so excited about launching our first the WOVEN: Women Veteran Entrepreneurs Network event on November 6 in LA. Co-hosted by the SBA, this event will kick off their Veteran Small Business Week. We’re more than half way to our attendance goal and registrations are pouring in. Help us sell out by spreading the word to your clients who are women veteran or military spouses.

  • Download a WOVEN flyer, forward it to your local veteran groups; print it and pass out at your events; send an email to your mailing list.
  • Tweet about the event!

Also, we know you want to attend so you should sign up before we sell out! It’s an excellent professional development opportunity that will enable you to reach and serve women veterans. Learn more about the day’s fantastic agenda.

DIY, Etsy and Small Business Saturday

Here’s one concrete action that supports the Do-It Yourself economy.

We just found out about this great opportunity for your retail and Etsy clients for Small Business Saturday®. Retailers can capture the attention of customers and support local designers. They can connect with Etsy designers and throw a trunk show in their stores featuring one-of-a-kind products on Nov 29. The process is easy but the deadline for retailers to participate is tomorrow night at midnight, October 24, 2014. Click on the links to find out more!

While you’re at it, read the CAMEO White Paper: Do-It-Yourself Economic Growth: How Communities Can Cultivate Their Talent and Thrive.

Somewhat related… Our friends at ASBC have launched Proud to Be an American Company. Please forward to your clients as appropriate so they can sign the pledge. Some big companies are using a legal technique to purchase a smaller, foreign-based company, merge with them, and declare the foreign country as their new headquarters in order to avoid paying U.S. taxes. Most American businesses, like your neighborhood hardware store or coffee shop, aren’t going to be able to do that. And most are willing to pay their fair share for the investments that all businesses need to be successful: infrastructure, education, a stable legal system and law enforcement.

The Goodies

New opportunities for training, conference information, funding, scholarships, and other information that have crossed our desks since the last Must Know. I have posted a running tab of current Industry Goodies on the CAMEO website that lists items that were in past emails. Check it out to make sure you’re not missing anything, like grants whose deadlines are still alive!

New Article: Janie Barrera and Celina Pena of Accion published Building Wealth and Stability through Entrepreneurship. They discuss how “for low-income entrepreneurs, going into business is not only about the spirit of entrepreneurship – it is about the practical goal of supporting one’s family.” It’s one of about a dozen articles in the latest edition of Community Investments published by the Federal Reserve of San Francisco.

Election Info: California NonProfits has a special election issue newsletter. Remember to ‘vote your mission’ on November 4, 2014.

Micro Conference: Lend for America will hold its 6th annual conference at UC Berkeley on November 15-16. The conference is a hands-on training opportunity for students to learn from experts in the field and network with each other, and includes presenters from several CAMEO Bay Area members, including La Cocina, OBDC, and MEDA. Sessions are trainings on microenterprise topics including underwriting, client outreach, collections, business development, data collection, and more. The sessions would be useful for any entry-level staff out there or students/interns in your network. The promo code ‘microlend30’ will let you sign up for the early bird rate of $65.

Healthcare Webinars: The Small Business Administration and Small Business Majority are helping businesses navigate health care through the webinar series What the Healthcare Law Means For Your California Small Business . It’s every two weeks in English and monthly in Spanish. The next ones are on November 5, 2014 at 10:00am and November 19, 2014 at 1:00pm respectively.

Professional Development: The Aspen Institute’s leadership development initiative for emerging leaders in the U.S. microbusiness field – Emerging Leaders in Microbusiness (ELM^2)– offers a powerful and productive learning opportunity for high potential staff. Thanks to the continued support of Capital One, FIELD announces that the Request for Applications for its third class of fellows is now available online. Applications are due November 14, 2014.

New Report: FIELD, in partnership with the Citi Foundation, is pleased to announce the release of the newest findings from the Asset Building through Credit Pilot. The demonstration project worked with five microenterprise programs to test the delivery of secured card, combined with credit coaching, as a tool to help aspiring entrepreneurs to build their credit and move toward their business goals.
