Scott Sordahl was a self-employed timber
faller until back injuries and subsequent surgeries forced
him to seek a new way to support himself and his family. A
friend contributed the idea for a business when he commented
that he couldn't find a place between Redding and Medford
to have his boat repaired.
Scott was confident that he could run a business, but needed
to be sure that it was a good idea. He signed up for the It's
Your Business classes that Jefferson Economic Development
Institute (JEDI) offers. His research through these classes
showed him that there were 3,393 registered boat owners in
Siskiyou County. He thought if he could get even 5 percent
of that market, he could build a viable business. Scott started
Mt. Shasta Specialty Marine in Dunsmuir; it now draws customers
throughout Siskiyou and Shasta Counties.
After five years of experience, Scott faces the new and exciting
challenge of expanding. He plans to start a boat dealership,
selling boats and motors as well as repairing them. He has
found a larger building with good highway visibility and plenty
of space. He anticipates hiring two employees, and is working
to obtain financing to take his business to the next level. |
