2012 Agenda

Rural Summit
Wednesday, June 6: 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Two dynamic presenters lead two interactive sessions. You will take home ideas and tools to implement in your community and learn how to apply them.

Rural Tourism and Internet Marketing: Stepping Into the Future
Joanne Steele (bio) will introduce participants to a new view of rural tourism: as a journey into California’s storied past. A growing segment of the traveling public craves authentic experience, and is willing to leave traditional tourism amenities behind in exchange for a truly rural experience. Steele will then introduce internet marketing into the mix, showing how this technology is responsible for this awakening to rural tourism and how it is a vital part of rural business development.

Introducing Stewardship Tourism: Tourism for the 21st Century
Diane Strachan (bio) will introduce Stewardship Tourism, a high-value, collaborative, regional marketing strategy that supports rural small business development. It meets the needs of a rural region’s economic sustainability goals and the new target visitor – ‘The Stewardship Traveler’. Explore with her how to design, bundle, and market collaborative services and activities that attract and retain the Stewardship Traveler. Learn how to set up a Stewardship Tourism Fund as a strategic opportunity for visitors to express their values and leave behind resources to help care for the area the visitor deeply appreciated. Learn how small businesses and non-profits benefit from the Stewardship Tourism Fund strategy.
